You lock the door, put your suitcase in the car and for two weeks nothing happens in your house. Right?

Not quite. The bacteria you leave behind on your worktop, in your toilet and on your floors carry on living their lives. And those lives are a lot more dramatic than you'd expect.

Short answer to the question in the title? Yes. But also no. Because as with everything in microbiology, the answer is slightly more interesting than a straight yes or no.

Let's start at the beginning.

Our bacteria live two separate lives

The bacteria in YOKUU are Bacillus bacteria: nature's survival experts. They exist in two completely different states.

State one: the spore, a sleeping super seed

Picture a seed.

It looks lifeless. But give it water, the right temperature and a bit of fertile soil, and suddenly you have a plant.

Our bacteria do exactly the same thing.

In our dry cleaning tablets they aren't crawling around. They're asleep, packed safely inside a spore: an extremely tough protective capsule.

And that capsule is impressive.

It shields the bacterium from heat, dehydration, pressure and other harsh conditions. That's exactly why our bacteria survive the manufacturing of a dry effervescent tablet without any trouble. Where most bacteria would give up, these ones simply wait for better times.

State two: the vegetative cell

The moment you drop a YOKUU tablet into water, everything changes.

The spores wake up.

They germinate and become active bacteria again. Micro-organisms that start eating, multiplying and breaking down organic dirt.

That's when they do what they've been good at for millions of years: living on surfaces and building a healthy microbial ecosystem.

So what happens while you're on holiday?

Good question.

And the honest answer is: it depends. How humid is your home? How warm is it? How much organic material is left on the surface? How many bacteria were there to begin with?

But let's look at the most likely scenario.

Over time, food and moisture become scarce. The bacteria pick up on that shift immediately. They're constantly talking to each other through chemical signals and making decisions as a community.

Some go back into spore form. They hit pause and wait quietly for conditions to improve.

Others die off.

And a small group stays active for as long as it can.

It's a bit like a village preparing for a hard winter. Not everyone stays outside working. Some move indoors, others keep watch.

And now the strange part: yes, some bacteria are cannibals

No, not science fiction... Just microbiology!

Under severe stress, certain Bacillus species produce compounds that kill genetically near-identical neighbouring cells.

Why?

Because a bacterium is surprisingly nutritious.

A dead neighbour contains water, amino acids and other nutrients the surviving bacteria can use to stay active a little longer. At the same time it delays sporulation, keeping part of the population operational in case conditions do improve after all.

Harsh? Absolutely.

Luckily bacteria don't have feelings. Otherwise we'd have to start offering bacteria therapy. 😉

But mostly it shows how remarkably well organised bacteria are. They aren't loose single cells fending for themselves. They form communities that communicate, cooperate, divide tasks and sometimes sacrifice individuals so the group survives.

A smart community survives better

Think of a group of early humans.

If everyone sleeps at the same time, nobody is safe.

So a few stay awake to keep watch while the rest rest. Then they swap.

Bacteria do something similar.

Part of the population stays active as long as possible. Part goes to sleep in spore form. And under extreme stress, some cells give themselves up so the community as a whole stands a better chance.

That isn't primitive behaviour.

That's evolution at its best.

Why we believe in microbes

People still underestimate how extraordinary bacteria are.

For decades we were told that good hygiene means killing as many microbes as possible. As if a bucket of bleach solves every problem.

Nature doesn't work that way.

Millions of years of evolution taught bacteria to live together, build ecosystems and constantly adapt. They aren't the enemy of our living environment. They are our living environment.

At YOKUU we believe the future of hygiene isn't about making everything sterile. It's about restoring healthy microbial ecosystems.

Because the more we learn about bacteria, the clearer it becomes that they don't just help keep our homes healthy. They may still hold plenty of secrets that could help us in the future.

Quick answers

Do the bacteria in YOKUU die if I'm away for a long time?
Some do. But a large part returns to spore form and survives for months, until you clean again.

Do I need to clean extra after a holiday?
Not extra, just as usual. As soon as you dissolve a tablet in water the spores wake up and start breaking down organic dirt again.

How long do the bacteria stay active after cleaning?
As long as there's moisture and organic material available. After that they switch to spore form and wait for the next clean.

Is bacterial cannibalism actually proven?
Yes. González-Pastor and colleagues described the phenomenon in Science in 2003, in sporulating Bacillus subtilis.
