Did you know every house has its own bacteria? Not from the walls or the floor, but from the people who live in it. Microbiologist Jack Gilbert (University of Chicago) found that the bacteria on your light switches are microbially almost identical to the ones on your hands. The floor to your feet. Everywhere you go, you leave an invisible piece of yourself behind.

Move to a new place and it takes less than 24 hours for the space to become microbially yours. And that goes for a holiday home too.

A holiday home carries the microbiome of everyone who ever slept there

Your own place mostly holds your bacteria. A holiday home holds the bacteria of dozens of families who came before you, each with their own unique microbiome. That may sound uncomfortable, but it really isn't that bad. In nature, a diverse mix of micro-organisms is a sign of health rather than danger. Children who grow up in daycare, exposed every day to the bacteria of dozens of other children, build a more robust immune system than children raised in an environment that is kept too sterile.

But, and this is where it matters, not all bacteria belong everywhere. Some bacteria that are perfectly fine in your gut have no business on your kitchen counter. Pouring bleach over everything doesn't solve that. Because an empty surface doesn't exist. The moment you finish cleaning, it gets colonised again. By what floats in the air, sits on your hands, clings to the soles of your shoes. The question is never whether something comes back. The question is what.

Whoever gets there first, wins

In microbiology this is called competitive exclusion. Bacteria that occupy a surface keep others out. They take up the available space and nutrients, so there is simply nowhere left for unwanted newcomers. Whoever is there first decides who gets to stay.
